New Job, New City…wow I’m 20?

So I’m in, I have a position in the industry. Not just the industry I’ve been preparing for through my two years at college… but the sector of the industry in which I am most interested. Fashion. And all away from my bubble.

O-Town here I come. (ok so I’ll have a bubble there too… at least it’s a different bubble.)

Earth Hour

So we went to Earth Hour, and tried to use as little equpiment as possible as to not ruin the whole concept of the event. Here is a slideshow of what happened at the Staircase theatre in Hamilton. This was put up before but the post seems to have disapeared. I guess that is what happens when you are learning something new!

The sun is out, my trees are bare– can my legs be too?

It is April, the twentieth to be exact, and the sun is shining brightly and it makes me want to pull out my mini’s and sandals. And then I notice, my trees are bare still, so does that mean my legs should continue to hide?

My grandmother always told me not to wear white after Labour Day or before Victoria Day. Same deal with showing off the legs.  Tights are so uncomfortable if it is hot out, but April can be unpredictable in it’s choice of weather, especially in Ontario– and with a month until Victoria Day, when is the appropriate time to peal off?

I guess it all comes down to your everyday situation. If you are in a building without air conditioning, they will be coming off as soon as possible. Lighter fabrics always help with this yearly event, so if you aren’t ready to show off you legs yet (I’m not! yikes, they are pale!) lighter dresses with nude tights might have to last you until V-Day.

Hangers, Role Models and Model Behaviour

So here’s the thing. In the fashion world the art form which is being presented needs to be shown moving, flowing and well on something that isn’t a mannequin or an easel. Hangers if you will—moving, bending, falling, walking, stomping hangers.

They aren’t shown on role models, they are shown on models. People who get paid to look the way the designer wants them to look and walk how they are told to walk so they can be a breathing hanger for the clothes.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the models, I am a follower of Coco, Agyness and Lily D and have no shame in admitting it. But expecting these girls to be role models?

Isn’t that what parents and family is for?

Is Fashion Art?

Art is often thought of as visual arts, music, sculpting, and the things that are taught while in elementary school. But there are so many other things in the world that are considered art.

In the Devil Wears Prada, we watch as Miranda Priestly patiently and pointedly explains the importance of fashion in everyday life, Andy had just laughed at the ‘belts are so different’ comment made by a stylist at RUNWAY. Miranda says “This stuff? Oh ok I see you think this has nothing to do with you, you go to your closet and select that lumpy blue sweater for instance because you are trying to tell the world that you take yourself to seriously to care what you put on your back but what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis it is actually cerulean, and you are also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002 Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns and then it was Yves St. Laurent wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets. … And the cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it filtered down through the department stores, and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you no doubt fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical that you think you made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when in fact you are wearing a sweater that was picked for you by the people in this room–from a pile of stuff.”

And although I do realize I am quoting a movie, this is a blog about fashion and I can quote what I please.

Fashion is much more than that piece of clothing that you put on your back because the law does not prohibit you to go naked everywhere. There are many steps that go into making clothes, the fabric, the cut, the colour—all of these seemingly mundane details go into producing the art of a dress, pant, blouse, bag or shoe.

The vision of the artist comes through in a group of fabrics and materials that transform them into works of art that can be showed of on bodies of people all over the world. It is art, even if the world doesn’t want it to be. There are multiple magazines, web sites, and newspapers devoted to this art. There are exclusive fashion showings and fashion weeks around the world.

If this isn’t art…what is?

Adventures of a runner

I live above the 49th parallel with this there comes snow in winter. This is why I do not understand why people cannot seem to forget how to drive as soon as a couple flurries start falling from the sky- and why they suddenly become even more blind to others using the road.

I am a runner, and as such I will go out unless the wind does not allow me to. I wear NiteLite (Jeannie hook me up with some swag!?) in the dark, and  during the day I wear black. Not only do I dress for the weather, but I dress so that people are able to see me.

So why do I get almost run over every kilometer or so? (Saturday I dodged 3 cars…and I ran 7 of my 10km run on a pathway) Is going out and exercising really that taboo?  Should I just clog up my lungs and arteries by driving my car ever place I want to go?

Also– I understand that pathways seem to be sheltered from the main road. But people still use them, so people please don’t pop a squat on one- even if it is 830 on a Saturday morning. Some runner’s start their run at promptly 8am.

Social Networking… wow the world has changed…

It used to be that phone calls were not to be made or taken during the dinner hour. We had just seen our friends a couple of hours ago so there was no real need for use to be in contact with them. It was family time. Family time has changed. Just today I talked to my brother via web-cam– he lives in LA and doesn’t tend to make Sunday night dinners anymore.

What would I do without it now? I will openly admit that I check my facebook constantly. I almost cannot help it since Roz told me about that firefox add-on…  RSS feeds have saved me for projects quite a few times. And flickr is just fantastic.

And I’m sure my kids will be just as interested in something else, that connects more people even faster. My great-grandparents didn’t have a telephone. And now not only does every house have a line, but it seems that every ten year old and older has a cell as well.

New World

Images on my television vary from dancers (both celebrity and semi-pro), Anderson Cooper, genocide, Hollywood gossip and of course half hour sitcoms and full hour dramas.

Seemingly more and more often my peers seem to be regarding images such as; genocide and violent riots, as something as normal as Neil Patrick Harris asking for a high-five on How I Met Your Mother. I was sitting in my Active Citizenship class last week and my peers- who in their defense have not been educated in the eye of the media, were talking about how they think that not only is the media completely biased in what they are reporting on, but also that there is to much violence shown on the news.

In Kenya there has been a recent election, and myself being an avid runner have met quiet a few athletes from the nation. The election has been greatly disputed, and some 850 people have been killed in riots since December 27th. With not being able to contact people for many days brought this violence very close to home.

I do not see much about this violence on the television when I do get a chance to check out the news at six– have the stations weakened to the demand for Heath Ledger and Britney Spears in order to get good ratings? Have the real issues that exist in today’s world gone away?
